New Year’s Recipe: Cabbage with Bacon and Cheese

Many cultures associate cabbage with prosperity. Since it often symbolizes paper money, it has become a common tradition to eat cabbage on New Year’s Day.

A lot of people simply boil the cabbage, season it with salt and pepper, and eat it along side their New Year’s meal. Personally, I like to spruce it up a bit:

  1. Fry several slices of bacon.
  2. Remove bacon and drain on paper towels.
  3. Fry chopped cabbage in a spoonful of the remaining bacon grease.
  4. Transfer cabbage to a plate. Salt and pepper the cabbage. Top with crumbled bacon and shredded cheese.

New Year’s Recipe: Black-Eyed Pea Gumbo

Ingredients

1 tablespoon oil or butter
1 onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
5 celery ribs, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
2 cups chicken broth
4 (15 oz) cans black-eyed peas, undrained
1 (10 oz) can diced tomatoes and green chiles, undrained
1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes, undrained
1 cup uncooked rice

Directions

  1. In large saucepan, saute onion, bell pepper, and celery in oil or butter.
  2. Add chicken broth, garlic, rice, black-eyed peas, diced tomatoes and green chiles, and diced tomatoes.
  3. Heat to boiling, reduce heat, and simmer 45 minutes.

Note: Sauce will thicken. Additional broth or water can be added to finished gumbo to reach the desired consistency.

You’ve finally decided on this year’s resolution. What steps can you take to ensure you keep your resolution?

  1. Make sure you’ve decided on just one goal for the year. If you try to make too many changes in your life, you can’t narrow your focus and you can easily get overwhelmed. Choose the goal most important to you.
  2. Break your resolution into measurable goals. For example, if you are trying to lose weight, decide how much you would like to lose each week or month. If you are trying to save money, how much money will you put aside each pay period? According to a Quirkology Study, men are 22% more likely to keep their resolution if they set measurable goals.
  3. Plan for setbacks. What will you do if you do not meet your “measurable goals”? Don’t let setbacks halt your resolution in its tracks. Plan ahead for necessary adjustments. Knowing in advance how you will conquer problems will keep you motivated through the rough patches.

  4. Make your resolution public. According to Quirkology, women are 10% more likely to keep their resolution if they share their goals and get support from friends. Keep your friends and family updated on your progress. Join an internet forum related to your resolution and announce your plan for the year.
  5. Track your progress. Since your resolution has been divided into measurable goals, it will be easy for you to track these goals. Decide where you will physically track your progress such as a notebook, your computer, or an online source. Joe’s Goals is great place to track individual goals. Decide how often you will update your support group with your progress.
